Ben Loseke earned his bachelor's degree in Horticulture with an emphasis in Production from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 2012. While managing a plant tissue culture laboratory as a Research Technologist, Ben continued on with his schooling and gained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Agronomy and Horticulture from Nebraska. His Master's research focused on delaying bud break in 'Edelweiss' grapevines using dormant oils and plant growth regulators and his Doctorate dissertation explored planting groundcovers in the vineyard to eliminate herbicide use. Ben continues to work full-time for the University of Nebraska Viticulture Program which has been key in pushing forward the states grape and wine industry.
In the midst of working on his Ph.D., Loseke and his wife also started Midwest Barrel Company which sells used wine and whiskey barrels to wineries, breweries, distilleries and other beverage producers all over the world. This business has grown so much in the last few years that it has now become a second full-time job for Ben and has six full-time employees who keep it running smoothly.
